Verizon deploys Wireless Emergency Communication Centers

Verizon today deployed a number of Wireless Emergency Communication Centers to areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. The carrier deployed its WECCs on Staten Island, at Monmouth University in New Jersey, and at two locations in Toms River, New Jersey. The WECCs offer public access to device-charging and computer work stations, wireless phones, and other devices to enable visitors to contact friends and family.

The carrier has also deployed a number of mobile stores-on-wheels that function as Verizon Wireless stores in Staten Island and in Sea Girt and Howell, New Jersey. These stores offer free device charging and free domestic phone calls to local residents, as do all open Verizon store locations.

The carrier says it has seen continuing improvement in its network strength over the past day. Verizon says that 96 percent of its cell sites are in service and serving customers in the impacted area.
