Apple issues iOS 6.1, Xcode 4.6 betas to developers

iOS 6.1 features yet to be exposed

In the wake of the public launch of iOS 6.0.1, Apple has also released the first betas of iOS 6.1 and Xcode 4.6 to developers. While the Xcode release is likely meant to support iOS 6.1, it's not clear what most of the changes in the latter include.

One known improvement involves the Map Kit. "The Map Kit framework now lets you programmatically search for map-based addresses and points of interest," Apple writes. "The MKLocalSearch class initiates a search for map-based content using a natural language string. In other words, you can enter placename information or portions of an address and have Map Kit return search results that match the information you provide. For example, searching for the string 'coffee' would return the location of local coffee bars along with information about each one."

Oooo, a new XCode version! Why, I can hardly wait to see what shiny new non-functional features they've added! (I'd add "and which existing show-stopping bugs they have failed to fix" but since they have never fixed an existing show-stopping bug there isn't much suspense any more.)

Basically, XCode is a big pile of broken junk which isn't worth using, and the only hope for improvement in any particular part is that a new version will rip out the entire section which is broken and replace it with something else -- which will also be broken, but possibly broken in a different way.

Support for natural language search in Map Kit is a fantastic feature. This capability will make it easy to develop sophisticated applications that can relate information from private databases to results from geographical queries.
