Schiller confirms iPad mini has stereo speakers

Refutes pulled Amazon claim

Apple's senior VP for worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, has confirmed that the iPad mini uses stereo speakers. In information comes in response to a customer email on the topic, pointing out that Apple hasn't been clear on what kind of output the Mini might use. "It is stereo," Schiller's answer reads.

The news may help explain why Amazon pulled its comparison with the Kindle Fire HD, since the web ad claimed that the Mini has a mono speaker. Indeed Apple's full-sized iPads use just a single speaker, making the Mini unique. Even the fourth-generation iPad hasn't been upgraded to stereo.

Well that and the chart was clearly deceptive, even by Amazon's standards, and I think they caught a lot of, um, flack for it.

It's one thing to say that the Kindle Fire HD is a cheaper alternative to the iPad mini. That's a very fair selling point, and one a lot of people will respond to.

To try and claim that it is a *superior product* to the iPad mini is laughably deceptive, and even uninformed buyers deserve more than that. I think that path would have backfired pretty badly on Amazon in the long run.

Another funny thing going on with respect to the Amazon ad was the phrase no HD movies or TV shows. The HD standard includes 720p, which is supported in full resolution on the iPad Mini. The differentiator is the ability to shw 1080i and 1080p movies or TV.

In addition, the ad claimed the Kindle HD had WiFi with MIMO and the iPad Mini did not. The iPad Mini has high speed WiFi and MIMO is integrated onto the 802.11n standard anyway. So, I was not sure how MIMO is a big differentiator. So, the ad was extremely misleading.

The ad was clearly deceptive, but regarding the presence of stereo speakers, does it really matter when they are so close apart?
