Google Maps adds natural geography details

updated 12:59 pm EDT, Fri October 26, 2012

Google updates Maps with natural geography overlay

Google on Friday announced it has added new details to its online Google Maps. The natural geography overlay for the basemap includes new terrain color gradations to depict vegetation and labels that show natural land formations. Users can now see mountain ranges, deserts, and forests without turning to the satellite imagery.

The newly updated maps also retains borders and labels for countries, but also shows off how geographical features affect borders, structures, and locations of cities. Unchanged in the update are bodies of water, though Google added labels for large natural features in a curved type.

The update only thus far reached the web-based Google Maps, though it's expected to reach the mobile app soon as well.
