Chromebooks sold out at online retailers

updated 06:22 pm EDT, Thu October 25, 2012

Best Buy, Amazon, Google Play sold out of Chromebooks

The recently announced new Chromebook from Samsung and Google appears to have sold out at all of the online retailers carrying the device. A look at the Chromebook product pages for Amazon and Best Buy earlier today showed the device out of stock, as was the case with Google's Play Store page. The Best Buy page has since been updated to show the device as available.

There is no way to know just how many units these online outlets were provided with, so exact early sales figures are not possible. Still, the new Chromebook seems to have proven more popular than its forebears, which have struggled since their introduction to gain any traction among consumers.

Previous Chromebooks have been priced comparable to regular notebooks, even though they were less capable due to their reliance on Chrome OS. The $250 price tag on the new model may have proved a tipping point for Google's computers, finally putting them on a level that would make them attractive to consumers.

The new Chromebook has a dual-core A15-based Samsung Exynos Dual Soc, 2GB RAM, 16GB of built-in flash storage, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. Its matte display outputs at 1366x768. It's less than 0.8 inches thick and weighs less than 2.5 pounds. It has HDMI, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot and a SIM slot. It also comes with 100GB of free space on Google Drive.
