Some Apple Stores to allow 3rd-gen iPad returns

updated 05:40 pm EDT, Tue October 23, 2012

Stockton Street, San-Fran store to allow 30-day returns

At least a few Apple customers miffed at the Cupertino company's introduction of a refreshed iPad today will be able to exchange their now not-quite-latest-and-greatest devices for the new-New iPad. The San Francisco Apple Store on Stockton Street has extended the return policy for recently-purchased iPads, allowing customers to exchange them for the version Apple announced today. Tablets bought within the last 30 days that show no signs of wear and tear can be exchanged for the new model.

The Stockton Street store's policy was uncovered by CNet after Twitter user @TubbyEmu claimed an Apple Care rep had confirmed that iPad 3s could be returned for the new iPad.

Electronista's own look into the matter has yielded mixed results. A call to the Apple Store in Richmond, VA, yielded a policy similar to the one seen with the Stockton Street store, though we were advised to bring in any 3rd-gen iPads as soon as possible to ensure they fell within the 30-day window in which store employees said "we have some leeway." The Apple Store at Tyson's Corner, VA, though, said there was no official policy they knew of. Apple's standard 14-day return policy is still in effect there.

The new-New iPad features an A6X processor, which Apple says makes it twice as fast as its immediate predecessor in CPU operations, graphics processing, and image signal processing. It also features 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity.
