Nokia pushes WP7 handsets into developing economies with Lumia 510

Nokia is making good on its promise to introduce Lumia devices powered by the Windows Phone mobile OS at the lower-end of the smartphone segment as it targets developing markets. The Lumia 510 running WP7 (Mango) can be purchased for just $200 as the Finnish company tries to drive wider adoption of its smartphones. The handset will go on sale in India, South America, China, and other parts of Asia from November.

The Lumia 510 centers on a 4-inch display with a resolution of 800x400 pixels. Its Snapdragon S1 processor is clocked at 800MHz and is matched with 256MB RAM, although on board storage is pared back to just 4GB. A 5-megapixel camera is integrated into the rear of the device, while connectivity includes Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11n. The Lumia 510 also incorporates a GPS module to take advantage of Nokia Maps.

Nokia also promises 7GB of free online with a Skydrive account for buyers. It comes in a range of colors including red, yellow, cyan, white and black. While Nokia continues to drive the prices of its Windows Phone handsets down at the lower end to maintain sales volume, its real hopes lie with the launch of the Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920 and 820, which will also go on sale in early November.
