Apple reveals 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

updated 01:49 pm EDT, Tue October 23, 2012

Improved screen, thinner body, loss of optical drive

Apple has revealed a 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with Retina display it is shipping today, confirming rumors and analyst claims from earlier this month. Measuring 13.3-inches diagonally, the 300-nit IPS display has a 2560x1600 resolution, four times that of its predecessor, which makes it the second highest resolution notebook on the market today.

Partly due to the smaller footprint compared to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina, in order to make it thinner by 20-percent, down to 0.75-inches, the optical drive had to be sacrificed. A pair of ports for USB 3.0 and another two for Thunderbolt join those for HDMI, headphones, a MagSafe 2 power connector, and an SD card reader around the sides. A FaceTime HD webcam and dual microphones are also included, while the improved stereo speakers are moved further down the sides to make room for the full-sized keyboard.

Processors will start from the dual-core Intel Core i5 running at 2.5GHz, though it will be using the integrated HD 4000 graphics instead of a discrete graphics card because of its size. The base model, including the aforementioned processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state drive, will cost $1700. The existing non-Retina MacBook Pro will continue to be offered alongside the Retina version, though the improved screen will have a $500 premium. A 256GB model will cost $2000, and options to include a 2.9GHz dual-core Intel i7 processor and 786GB of flash storage will be available, but it is notable that there is no option for 16GB of RAM, nor quad-core processors.

Too expensive! If you BTO it to have the same processor and SSD as the 15-inch model, it costs the same as the 15-inch model in spite of the screen being substantially smaller.

...might the point be to pack all that they could into a more portable vs less expensive package...?
