AMD scores win with low power Z-60 dual-core APU in Fujitsu tab

adopting its new low-power Z-60 'Hondo' APU for its Stylistic Q572 Windows 8 tablet. With ARM processors currently dominating the current mobile device space, both AMD and Intel are fighting to make competive x86 mobile chips that will find their way into new Windows 8 tablet devices. AMDs Z-60 APU's are competing head-to-head with Intel's 'Medfield' Atom processors for a foothold in light-weight iterations of full Windows 8 tablets.

"AMD is pleased to announce Fujitsu as the first customer of the AMD Z-60 APU in conjunction with their new tablet and the launch of Windows 8," said AMD VP Steve Belt. "We believe Fujitsu's customers will be thrilled with the combination of features, performance and battery life we worked together to provide in this very appealing system."

The Fujitsu Q572 centers on a 10.1-inch multitouch display with a 1366x768 resolution that also supports pen input. It sports both front and rear facing cameras and incorporates an integrated Smart Card reader, fingerprint sensor as well as two USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI port. A multicard reader is also included. Even though the device weighs a relatively light 1.6 pounds, it utilizes a removable battery. Storage options range between 64GB and 256GB SSDs.

Its Z-60 processor integrates an 80-core Radeon HD 6250 GPU on a single-die, while its x86-based dual-core CPU is clocked at 1GHz. AMD believes that the processor has sufficient horsepower to be targetted at "performance tablets" running the new Windows 8 OS due out at the end of this week. However, Fujitsu is also releasing a Windows 7 version, which may find greater levels of acceptance in enterprise environments than its more radical Windows 8 successor. [via PC Mag]
