Samsung: Apple not cut off from LCD supplies, reports false

updated 11:34 pm EDT, Mon October 22, 2012

Millions of panels shipped to Apple annually

According to a Samsung spokesperson, reports that the Korean manufacturing leader is planning to discontinue LCD sales to Apple are false. "Samsung Display has never tried to cut the supply for LCD panels to Apple," the spokesman said. Additionally, Samsung is requesting that the original story by the Korea Times be revised to reflect the denial.

The newspaper cited an unnamed Samsung source in its report on the LCD shipments. The source claimed that the company is no longer able to supply screens to Apple at a steep discount, as Apple's strict quality control requirements such as those plaguing the iPhone 5 construction lower the financial attractiveness to Samsung of providing the iPhone maker with displays.

Samsung reportedly shipped fewer than three million displays to Apple in the third quarter of this year, and the South Korean manufacturer is expected to ship fewer than 1.5 million for the fourth quarter. According to reports, Samsung displays were not used in the production of Apple's forthcoming iPad mini.

Regardless of Samsung's denial of cutting Apple off, the Cupertino manufacturer has also been sourcing displays from Sharp and LG. Chip manufacture for Apple's line of iOS devised is allegedly shifting away from Samsung.

Stories quoting 'anonymous-industry-officials' seem to be a tech-blog staple on slow news days. Then when things pick up, the retractions get posted.

As a large percentage of Samsung's revenue comes from components shipped to Apple, the big loser in the deal would be Samsung. Samsung manufactures no components that could not be economically sourced from other parties. Therefore, Samsung needed to retract the story to prevent any potential concerns from investors.
