Analyst: iPad mini to be ''competition's worst nightmare''

updated 01:55 pm EDT, Fri October 19, 2012

iPad mini price point remains unclear

Echoing recent forecasts, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu suggests the rumored iPad mini likely represents "the competition's worst nightmare." The expectation is based on the observation that competing platforms, such as Android, have yet to make a dent in the iPad's market share, even with price points significantly below $399 and $499 for the iPad 2 and third-generation model, respectively.

The analysis, which was quoted by AppleInsider, leaves open a range of possibilities for the iPad mini price point, though Wu sees no need for Apple to compete directly against Google's Nexus 7 or Amazon's Kindle Fire. He expects the company to settle on $299 or $349 as the entry price, bridging the gap between the $199 iPod touch and the $399 iPad 2.

Rumors suggest the iPad mini will feature a 7.85-inch display with 1024x768 resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio, though some leaks have disagreed on the particular details. An aluminum casing, two color variants, and optional 3G/4G connectivity are also expected.

The iPad mini is believed to be the highlighted product in an Apple media event scheduled on Tuesday.
