Report: Amazon bringing on 50,000 employees for holidays

Temporary hires up slightly from last year

In anticipation of a busy holiday season, Amazon will be bringing on more than 50,000 temporary employees for its fulfillment centers across the United States. Amazon's hiring move is in keeping with normal behavior among physical retailers, who typically bring on extra staff in order to handle the increased customer load during the busy holiday shopping season. Amazon's seasonal hiring for this year is slightly above what it was for 2011.

Reuters reports that Amazon's temporary associates will work to meet increased customer demand over the winter holiday, but the company expects to bring on thousands of those temporary employees in full-time positions after the busy shopping season.

Walmart and Target are also bringing on thousands of new employees for the holidays. Like Amazon, Walmart's seasonal hiring, at more than 50,000, is up from last year. Target's plan to hire between 80,000 and 90,000 employees, though, is down from the 92,000 it brought on last year.
