13-inch Retina MacBook Pro said to debut later this month

Apple to expand Retina MacBook line with smaller model

A source at a high-profile US retailer has reportedly confirmed that Apple will be adding a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro to its notebook lineup at an event later this month. The new 13-inch MacBook would join Apple's 15-inch model in bringing Retina technology -- which first emerged with Apple's iOS devices -- to the notebook space. While the announcement -- indeed, the very existence of a late-October event -- has not been confirmed by Apple, the unveiling of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro would be in keeping with previous predictions.

9to5Mac, which brought news of the new Retina MacBook Pro did not divulge further information on its source, but said the source was "consistently reliable."

The new notebook is said to come in two configurations, with processor speed and storage being the differentiating factors. Apple will continue to offer a non-Retina MacBook Pro, and the Retina model will be sold at a higher price.

The 13-inch Retina model has been expected since Apple revealed the 15-inch model earlier this year. The model is believed to have been delayed by low display manufacturing yields, which are also said to have affected the rumored iPad mini.

The new MacBook is also believed to have shown up in online benchmarks. Reportedly, at least one model will feature a 2.9GHz Core i7-3520 processor, with 8GB of RAM.
