Android 4.1 update for Droid RAZR M leaks early

updated 04:09 pm EDT, Sat October 13, 2012

Jelly Bean arrives early, but with caveats

A leaked version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has arrived for the Motorola Droid Razr M, giving users the ability to upgrade to the latest version of Android a bit more than a month after the device's release. The update, however, is not a final release candidate, so users upgrading may be doing so at the cost of violating the warranty on the device. It also carries the risk of possibly being ineligible for future updates should the code underlying the update change before the final release.

The update was revealed in a tweet from @P3Droid, who repeated the warning regarding upgrades and warranties for users downloading it. The upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will bring a number of improvements to the user interface of the OS. Jelly Bean brings Project Butter, which increases Android's frame rate to 60 FPS and improves response times.

The update will also give users access to Google Now, a search and voice interaction feature that, over time, begins to guess information users may be interested in and serve it to them without the need to search for it.

The leaked version, build number 9.8.1_Q25, is 255MB in size and can be flashed in stock recovery. It has a build date of October 12, so it is quite possible this is not the final version and it may see significant changes before a wider release.

The appearance of a functioning version of Jelly Bean this soon after the device's release may bode well for Google's forthcoming efforts keeping Motorola devices up to date. The Razr M, along with the Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD, was promised to receive an update to Version 4.1 by the end of the year when Motorola unveiled them in September.
