Microsoft reveals Windows 8 packaging, Pro upgrade pricing

updated 12:56 pm EDT, Fri October 12, 2012

New packaging saves weight, reduces pollution

Microsoft has let slip the full packaging range and pricing for Windows 8. Five different designs will be used for the packaging, which now consists of paper-based materials, excluding the DVD itself. The change in packaging has reduced its weight by 41-percent, and allows Microsoft to make an 80-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption.

Pre-orders have opened for the operating system, with the standard version priced at $100 and the Pro for $140. An upgrade to Professional with physical media will cost $70 as an introductory offer, with it becoming $200 at the start of February next year, while a Windows 8 "Pro Pack" will cost $70 and have no physical media but will add Media Center and DVD Playback to the computer.

The previously announced upgrade offer through Windows.com from the 26th is still set to take place in 140 countries, at a cost of $40. Buyers of eligible Windows 7 PCs after June 2nd can get the upgrade for $15. [via Windows Team Blog]
