Hands on: HTC One X+ for AT&T

Flagship One phone gets minor upgrades

HTC recently introduced the One X+, an upgraded version of its best-selling Android phone, the One X, which arrived early in the year. The X+ now features a black housing rather than white, though the most important changes are on the inside--a quad-core Tegra 3 processor finally paired with LTE for US customers. Electronista checked out the new device at a MobileCon event ahead of its official launch at AT&T.

Like its predecessor, the One X+ is surprisingly light for its size. We expected it to be perceivably heavier, due to the larger 2100 mAh battery, but the weight difference is negligible. The new battery is claimed to extend the talk time by an additional six hours, and a welcome change for an LTE device.

The Tegra 3 chip is a 1.7GHz variant, slightly faster than the 1.5GHz edition found in most devices. We did not run benchmark tests to compare the One X+ against the Galaxy S III or iPhone 5, but in real-world tests it proved to be extremely quick. Users can also expect a bit of a performance boost from the Android 4.1 optimizations, while HTC's Sense UI has been tweaked for the new phone.

We already liked the One X, and most of the other One-series offerings, and the One X+ is a sensible upgrade for the popular handset. The 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 panel is beautiful, maintaining 1280x720 resolution and now protected by Gorilla Glass 2 for durability and scratch resistance. The upgrades are admittedly modest, but just enough to make the X+ a better competitor against the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5.

AT&T has yet to announce pricing or launch details for the X+.
