Microsoft: Windows 8 to have 100,000 apps by February

updated 08:08 pm EDT, Thu October 11, 2012

Company expects 400 million Windows 8 devices sold by July

Microsoft's sales and marketing vice president expects a healthy app ecosystem for the company's Windows 8 platform in the near future, as well as healthy overall sales for Microsoft. In an interview with Beet.TV, Keith Lazio said Microsoft expects that February will find Windows 8 with more than 100,000 apps. By July, Microsoft expects to have sold some 400 million Windows 8 devices.

"It's not just about pivoting around productivity," Lorizio said, laying out Microsoft's strategy going forward, "now we're going to pivot off the customer."

Lorizio acknowledged that a thriving app catalog will be a critical element of Windows 8's success. To that end, the company will aggressively pursue building that catalog to surpass the 100,000 mark over the first three months following Windows 8's release.

The availability of apps for a platform tends to have a considerable impact on its overall image, and device manufacturers are well aware of this fact. Google's Play Store now claims about 657,000 apps, just behind Apple's claimed 700,000 apps for iOS. Troubled BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has taken to guaranteeing cash for developers making apps for its BlackBerry 10 platform, promising them $10,000 in earnings for their first year, given that their app makes $1,000 on its own.

Lorizio also gave some detail regarding the work Microsoft has been doing on the ad environment for Windows 8 apps. He revealed that Microsoft will allow advertisers and developers to serve ads through either Microsoft or a number of other ad providers. Microsoft's ads, though, will incorporate a number of rich content elements, which Lorizio says will provide a deeper ad experience.
