Sprint, Zoove offer 'StarStar Me' numbers to customers

updated 05:09 am EDT, Tue October 9, 2012

Phone number becomes name prefixed by two stars

Sprint has started a service that allows its customers to have a second number using their name. A collaboration between the carrier and Zoove, the StarStar Me system can let people phoning from any major US carrier call customers subscribed to the Sprint service by dialing two stars followed by their name.

StarStar users can choose to have their phone ring as normal, or by using an app, can send a link for a profile page on a social network or the StarStar Me profile to the caller. An audio message could also be played instead of answering the phone.

Zoove, based in Palo Alto, has a catalog of such numbers stretching into the millions. Up until now, the company has sold thousands of StarStar numbers to companies, and has decided to sell to individuals in order to increase sales. Partnering initially with Sprint, it hopes to offer the service with other carriers early next year.

Sprint users can get their StarStar numbers for $3 per month. [via All Things D]

Complete load of nonsense. In the example **sarah the first Sarah to sign up gets that and the other 100,000 Sarah's who try get pissed off. You could say use your Twitter ID but who is to say that someone isn't using that for Facebook or something else and thinks "I'll use that as my sprint ID"?

If I'm going to end up with **DAQ12398 instead of DAQMAN then I may as well just use a randomly selected phone number. It sounds improbable but I've used DAQMAN for about twenty years and yet when Facebook and Twitter appeared DAQMAN was already taken! On of them is a data acquisition expert in Australia. It's a big world!

[SIZE=3]I guess I got lucky because I got my name as the first choice which kind very that simple five letter name was available that easy. I guess it pays the check your email early because I got really excited when I saw this. Can't wait to get my business cards reprinted it's a great idea it's worth three dollars a month. Now bring the iPhone App out so I can use this now!!! Yep that's right "NO IPHONE APP TO MAKE THIS WORK" I guess I got lucky because I got my name as the first choice which kind very that simple five letter name was available that easy.
