Apple updates Configurator to v1.2, adds iOS 6 support

updated 11:44 pm EDT, Tue October 9, 2012

Now offers global proxy, Lock to App, fixes, more

Late Tuesday, Apple updated its Apple Configurator mass-imaging and control program for Macs that manages remote iOS devices to version 1.2, adding support for iOS 6 features on supervised devices. Also new with this version a "Lock to App" feature, a global HTTP proxy, support for iOS 6 restrictions, and a way for managers to allow users access to features previously restricted, including access to the iBookstore for purchase of certain kinds of e-books, use of Game Center, iMessage and allowing users to remove apps from the device themselves if desired.

The Mac app also allows managers to filter profanity out of Siri, and allows the installation of new configuration profiles. There is also support for configuring advanced network options on Apple TV, improved reliability when activating a new iPhone or iPad with cellular services, an improved ability to update or restore devices in Recovery Mode, and the last settings used on the Prepare pane are retained now, even when Configurator is quit and relaunched. The usual assortment of bug fixes is also included.

The program allows for easy setup and administration of iOS configurations that can then be assigned to users. Up to 30 devices at a time can be configured with use policies and standard apps and data, or customized for specific levels of users. The update is 15.4MB in size and available for free through the Mac App Store.
