Apple carbon fiber deal may be part of three-year project

updated 03:05 pm EDT, Tue October 9, 2012

End goal likely to be lighter portables

Apple's recently-rumored carbon fiber purchase from a Japanese company is part of a much larger initiative, Macotakara says it has learned. The site now claims that the research division of the company has been working with Apple for at least three years. To what end, though, still hasn't been mentioned.

The most likely candidate would be upgrading the casing of Apple's portable products. Carbon fiber can improve the strength of portable devices while simultaneously reducing their weight. That might be especially important for the iPad and/or MacBook Air, since both are marketed on how much they weigh. Despite improvements over time, the iPad can still be too heavy to hold comfortably for long periods.
