New photos show alleged back, dock connector for iPad mini

updated 01:17 pm EDT, Tue October 9, 2012

Authenticity uncertain, but consistent with earlier leaks

Two new photos allegedly show the back and the Lightning dock connector of Apple's upcoming iPad mini. Posted by 9to5Mac's Sonny Dickson, the photos have little context, and it's difficult to judge their authenticity. They are, however, consistent with a number of earlier parts leaks, and the Wall Street Journal recently reported that production of the new tablet is already underway.

One of the few pieces of context is a full-sized iPad, used to show how small the Mini is by comparison. The new model is believed to be Apple's answer to the growing popularity of 7-inch tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7. While company co-founder Steve Jobs once famously dismissed 7-inch designs, the iPad is now surrounded by competitors taking that approach. One of the main advantages is cost; whereas a Nexus 7 sells for as little as $199, even Apple's last-generation iPad 2 is $399. The iPad mini is expected to be slightly larger at 7.85 inches, and perhaps over the $200 pricepoint, but not by a substantial amount.

I'm sure developers will love being told to update their software once again to support yet another resolution, though...
