Microsoft celebrates upcoming launch of Windows 8 with free Boingo hotspots

Microsoft, as part of its Windows 8 celebrations, has sponsored six new Wi-Fi hotspots powered by Boingo. The locations are in six Manhattan subway stations and some highly-trafficked San Francisco areas. The complimentary access lasts until the end of the year.

The hotspots will introduce the Windows Store for Windows 8 to app developers. The subway-based hotspots are supported by Transit Wireless' network. In San Francisco, the hotspots are located in Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, UN Plaza, the Financial District, Nob Hill, and some others.

Starting November 1, Microsoft will sponsor over 200 Wi-Fi zones in Manhattan. All the hotspots are covered under Boingo's Cloud Nine advertising network. It is in place at over 70 major airports, dozens of shopping centers and stadiums, as well as a network of hotels, restaurants, and recreational areas.

There will not be any restrictions put in place depending on the kind of Wi-Fi device accessing the network.
