BBC will add science, nature original content YouTube channels

BBC Worldwide on Monday revealed it will launch two original content channels on YouTube. One of them will focus on nature, with content originating from the BBC Earth Productions unit. The other will be hosted by James May of Top Gear fame and focus on science, with the production partner being 360 Productions.

The latter channel is due to go live early in 2013, while no timeline was given for the former show. The announcement comes as YouTube revealed that it will invest a significant amount of money for its Channels.

At the same time, BBC Worldwide announced it will launch some long-form programming in the UK and Canada for the first time, including EastEnders, The Likely Lads, some episodes from the Shakespeare Collection and The Trials of Life as well as Campion and The Onedin Line.

Additional archive footage will be added to the six current BBC Worldwide YouTube channels, which have a total of 1.7 million subscribers. Episodes from Top Gear season 18 have been added on Monday as well.
