Sony halts Xperia Tablet S sales over manufacturing flaw

updated 11:10 am EDT, Fri October 5, 2012

Water-resistant tablet to be recalled, repaired

Sony has stopped sales of its Xperia Tablet S, due to quality control issues. According to Reuters, the tablet should be water resistant, however a manufacturing flaw at a Chinese plant has caused some tablets to go on sale with a noticable gap between the screen and the case, and has pulled the product until the issue is resolved.

After a launch last month, Sony has shipped 100,000 of the tablets worldwide, and has said it will fix any tablets already sold that have the flaw. Despite the recall, the company expects the cost of repairs to not significantly impact its earnings.

The Tablet S uses a 1.4GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, and has 1GB of RAM and between 16 and 64GB of internal storage. A 9.4-inch touchscreen, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and an IR remote were the tablet's key features, along with its PlayStation certification and a bundled $45 credit for Google Play. It went on sale for between $400 and $600, depending on storage size.
