Lockitron reveals remote controllable wireless door lock

Lockitron has unveiled its second-generation wireless door lock for use. Unlike a previous version that required users to completely remove their existing lock, the new device can easily be retrofitted to most deadlocks. The device works will all phones, but users of an iPhone 4S or 5 can use Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity to have the Lockitron automatically unlock on approach.

In addition to Bluetooth connectivity, the Lockitron also has built-in Wi-Fi allowing users to control the lock remotely via a web app. Older phones can also control the device using text commands. Users can set the lock to unlock for others, as well as receive a notification when the door is unlocked. Users who like to tinker can also program the device through its Arduino-compatible ATMega CPU.

The Lockitron is up for pre-order at $149 each including shipping to the U.S. The company says that it needs to receive 1,000 orders before it can go ahead with production with orders expected to ship in March 2013. The company adds that usser credit cards won't be charged until devices are ready to ship. [via Macrumors]
