Improvements to Maps, SkyDrive, Bing apps

Microsoft has outlined what updates it will perform to built-in apps after installing Windows 8. A company blog post states the updates apply to apps included in the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) edition, which will update through the Windows Store system, a new addition to Windows 8, however it has not been revealed if the updates will be rolled into included apps on the version being released to customers directly.

The list of updates contains a number of notable changes along with expected UI improvements and bug fixes. Maps will have a "Bird's Eye View" mode, as well as hints for driving directions, over 3,000 indoor venue maps, and integration with Bing and Travel apps. SkyDrive will have a new first-run experience and an improved search, Photos will allow for sharing over a network using Windows Home Server. Music will have "Expanded music services," which probably alludes to the Xbox Music service being set for release at the same time as Windows 8.

The first update rolled out will be for the Bing app, with others being released gradually until the Windows 8 release on October 26th. Developers, MSDN and TechNet subscribers who have installed Windows 8 since August will see the updates as they become available, and can choose to install them at a later time if required.
