Lawsuit, iPhone 5 spur interest in GS III

Samsung's Galaxy S III appears to have surged in sales following both Apple's $1.05 billion court victory and the revelation of the iPhone 5. This according to Localytics, which tracked sales of the Galaxy S III over the past four three months, finding that Samsung's flagship Android phone saw sales spikes for the weeks of the verdict and the announcement. Localytics' results suggest that the patent defeat may not have branded Samsung as a "imitator" in the eyes of the public, but it may have established a perception of the company as "comparable" to Apple.

Localytics measured weekly new device growth -- how many more handsets were added than the week before -- for the Galaxy S III from July 31 to October 1. Over that period, the smartphone saw average growth of nine percent. For the week when Apple won a $1.05 billion patent verdict, new device growth for the S III shot up to 16 percent. The week the iPhone 5 was announced, Samsung's flagship phone saw 15 percent new device growth.

The two weeks between those events saw new device growth tapering off, dropping to zero for the week of September 4. This suggests that consumers may have held off on purchasing an S III until they were certain of what features the new iPhone would have. Since the announcement of the iPhone 5, the S III has seen new device growth of 14 percent and nine percent.
