Barnes & Noble cuts price of Simple Touch to tackle new Kindle

Barnes & Noble has dropped the price of its Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight e-reader by $20. The price cut puts the Barnes & Nobles premiere e-reader at the same price point as the new Kindle Paperwhite, which also starts at $119. However, the key differentiator between the two is the Kindle Paperwhite requires an additional $20 fee if users want to avoid Amazon advertising.

The Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight was the first e-reader to combine e-paper with edge-lighting. Until its release, e-reader fans were forced to buy a clip-on lighting accessory if they wanted to read in the dark or in low light conditions. It comes with 2GB of onboard storage that will store up to 1,000 books with microSD card support for an additional 32GB of storage. When it launched in April it was retailing for $139.

The Kindle Paperwhite is the first Kindle e-reader to incorporate edge-lighting, but it also adds 62 percent more pixels to its display, making the text appear even more like printed text. Like the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, it supports touch screne input. In addition to the $119 model, Amazon is also offering a $179 version that adds free 3G access. Both new Kindle Paperwhites are shipping today.
