Google axes more services as 'spring cleaning' continues

updated 07:57 pm EDT, Sun September 30, 2012

AdSense for Feeds, ClassicPlus among those dropped

Google announced this week that it would be discontinuing a number of its services as the search company continues to narrow its focus. In a post on the company's blog earlier this week, Google laid out which services it would be discontinuing and why. The new feature reductions, which cover parts of services such as AdSense, Google Drive, and Google News, will begin early in October and will continue through November.

AdSense for Feeds, designed to help publishers place ads in RSS feeds, will begin phasing out on October 2, with final closing scheduled for December 3.

Classic Plus, which lets people upload or select images to use as a background on Google.com, will be discontinued in November of this year.

Google storage in Picasa and Drive will be consolidated over the next few months. Users will have 5GB storage across both services, and users paying for plans will have a clearer view of how much storage they are getting.

Google is shutting down or modifying a number of its other services, and more information is available on the company blog.

This is the third major "spring cleaning" announcement from the search company, which has been looking to streamline its services and increase efficiency. Earlier this year, Google shut down Google Video and iGoogle for spring cleaning. Before that, One Pass, BlackBerry Sync, and other services were discontinued in an April round of streamlining.
