Chitika: Kindle Fire HD sells fast, but Nexus 7 still leads

updated 06:01 pm EDT, Wed September 26, 2012

New Kindle Fire accounts for 11 percent of Kindle traffic

Just a week and a half after it began shipping to customers, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD accounts for 11 percent of all Kindle web traffic. This according to Chitika Insights, which conducted a traffic study for the older Kindle Fire, the Kindle Fire HD, and Google's Nexus 7. While the new Kindle Fire appears to be off to a fast start, Google's 7-inch tablet seems to have outpaced both of Amazon's offerings.

Chitika conducted a user agent analysis on hundreds of millions of ad impressions between September 14 and September 18 of this year. Apple's iPad continues to dominate the overall tablet market, but between the two Kindle Fires and the Nexus 7, Google's tablet accounted for a solid majority of ad impressions.

The Nexus 7 tallied 68.5 percent of impressions within the subset. The Kindle Fire accounted for 27.9 percent, while the Kindle Fire HD had 3.5 percent of impressions. The numbers suggest that Amazon's newest tablet has jumped out to quick early sales, though Chitika doesn't give overall ad impressions, so it is difficult to ascertain the impact the three 7-inch tablets are having in the marketplace on the whole.

Most recently, Chitika's figures showed Apple's iPad with a 91.1 percent share of web traffic. Those figures, though, don't correlate well with figures from other researchers, who find that the iPad holds about 70 percent of the tablet market.
