Foxconn: Production to resume tomorrow

updated 04:39 pm EDT, Mon September 24, 2012

Production halted over riot, will resume, no deaths

Following riots that shut down one of its facilities, Apple supplier Foxconn has claimed that the affected facility will return to production tomorrow. The Chinese company told CNet that the riot, which involved around 2,000 people, had resulted in no deaths and was now under control. Foxconn even disputes the "riot" nomenclature, preferring instead to refer to what happened at its Taiyuan factory as an "incident."

Workers at Foxconn's Taiyuan factor became restless at about 11 pm local time, and some claim the unrest stemmed from a guard striking a worker. The next four hours saw 2,000 of the plant's total 79,000 employees becoming unruly. About 40 people have been taken to the hospital, and an undisclosed number of people have been arrested.

Foxconn has made its way into the news several times before. Previously, 100 workers engaged in violence at its Chengdu plant. Foxconn has also become somewhat notorious for the treatment of its workers. The company produces products for Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Nokia, and others, but the fact that it manufactures parts for Apple's iDevices has drawn a great deal of criticism.
