Verizon leads in latest expansion

Verizon and AT&T have announced their latest LTE rollout locations, bringing 4G service to a long list of new cities ahead of the iPhone 5 launch. Verizon leads the current push, deploying LTE for the first time in 19 cities and expanding the existing footprint in an additional 21 locations. AT&T, in contrast, plans to activate LTE service this week in just nine cities.

Last week brought yet another round of LTE expansion for both companies, though the news was overshadowed by Apple's announcement. The sixth-generation handset is the first iPhone to support LTE technology, which typically brings significant improvements in speed over 3G standards. The device is claimed to be immune from the battery drain issues that have plagued many competing devices when connected via LTE.

Verizon's new LTE cities include American Falls, Idaho; Americus, Georgia; Aspen-Snowmass, Greely, Pueblo and Silverdale, Colorado; Coffeyville, Emporia and Lawrence, Kansas; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Elijay, Moultry, Statesboro and Tifton, Georgia; Marion County, Ohio; Merced, California; and Richmond, Indiana.

AT&T will bring LTE to Anchorage, Alaska; Birmingham, Alabama; Detroit, Michigan; Honolulu, Hawaii; Memphis, Tennessee; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; Sacramento, California; and Seattle, Washington. [via Macrumors]
