OS X Server for Mountain Lion updated, adds iOS 6 support

updated 11:00 pm EDT, Thu September 20, 2012

Now handles DHCP, Mail blacklists, managing Netboot, more

Following the release of iOS 6 and an update for the client (user) edition of OS X 10.8, Apple has updated its $20 OS X Server application (which functions to convert the OS to the Server edition of Mountain Lion) to version 2.1, which adds the ability to manage the DHCP service, configuring DNS entries with second-level domains and aliases and iOS device management support to the program. The Mail, Software Update and Website services have received fixes for migration issues, and a number of fixes for various issues are included.

In addition to the DHCP service management, Server now has the ability to manage the blacklist settings for the Mail service, set a default NetBoot image, offers faster user account creation when large numbers of accounts are already in service, and lets Active Directory user authenticate to the Calendar service after migrating from earlier versions of OS X Server. It also fixes an issue with renewing certificates for use with the Apple Push Notification Service.

Other fixes include the prevention of what Apple calls "spurious 'Host name changed' alert messages after restarting," and addressing an issue where Airport Base Stations occasionally could be managed after upgrading from previous versions of Server. The Profile Manager now allows managing users' ability to connect to the Mac App Store only for software updates, a necessary function in Mountain Lion since the MAS has taken over for the formerly-separate Software Update panel in earlier versions of OS X.
