Apple releases iOS 6 via iTunes, iCloud

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Wed September 19, 2012

Adds new Maps app, Passbook, wider Siri support

As anticipated, Apple has released the completed version of iOS 6 to the public. The firmware is available through iTunes 10.7 or as an over-the-air update, and varies in size based on the target device. For an over-the-air update, a person has to go to the General section of iOS 5's Settings app.

While Apple has advertised iOS 6 as having over 200 new features, just a handful are major. These include Facebook integration, a Panorama option in Camera, a new Passbook app for coupons and tickets, and the replacement of the original Maps app with a Google-less redesign. The iPad has finally been given a native Clock app, and in the case of the third-generation model, the first non-iPhone release of Siri. New Siri functions include app launching, movie listings, and sports scores.

I just hope they've finally fixed the problem with smart playlists via iTunes match where none of your smart playlists show up in the correct track order on an iOS device. Either iOS 6 or the new iTunes needs to fix this. Very contrary to the "it just works" mantra.

I'd be nice if they'd just fix the iOS 6 update all together. I've attempted to update over the air three times now and it has failed every single time when it gets to "preparing the update".

It took about an hour and a half to do on my iPhone 4S, over the air (wi-fi). The first 45 minutes was downloading, and the last was the various install progress bars.

I'm befuddled how or if passbook works. The only button I can use, takes me to an error trying to load the iTunes store. Other than that, the update reset my brightness to much brighter than I usually have my phone, making everything pop out more.

First thing I did on the 4S was to switch on Bluetooth and drag iRadio from it's folder to the fourth (desktop) window. Then I saw something I never saw before. The phone self-rebooted. It came back with the app in the folder but the process repeated each time I tried again. When I moved the app one window over the 4S behaved normally.
