HP CEO hints the company is working on a smartphone

HP taking its time to develop its next smartphone, possibly for emerging markets

HP is, yet again, working on a smartphone, the company's CEO and President Meg Whitman indicated in a video interview with Fox Business. Whitman's comments can be taken to mean that the phone will be aimed in emerging markets, as the phone is the first kind of computing device owned by people there. Unlike HP's previous, ill-fated effort with webOS-powered devices, this time the company will take the time to do it right, she added.

"But we did take a detour into smartphone, and we've got to get it right this time," Whitman said. "So my mantra to the team is 'better right, than faster than we should be there' so we're working to make sure that, when we do this, it will be the right thing for HP and we will be successful."

The company is hoping to offers personal computing in all form factors, Whitman said, including desktops, notebooks, tablets, convertible notebooks, and smartphones.

No other details were offered, however, including whether the phone would use an updated version of the open-source webOS software, as in the past.
