Lightning adapter price sparks Apple online store confusion

Apple store initially lists adapter as free, recants

Product listings in some of Apple's online stores for its new Lightning 30-pin Adapter have apparently caused some confusion among customers, as some Apple stores mistakenly listed the adapter as being included free of charge with the purchase of an iPhone 5. The iPhone in Canada Blog first noticed the free adapter listing, which has since been changed. Customers buying the iPhone 5 and hoping to have it interface with their 30-pin devices will, in fact, have to purchase the Lightning Adapter in addition to the iPhone 5.

Apple's Canadian online store initially had a listing for the Lightning Adapter that informed customers that "your iPhone includes a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter..." and listing the separate Lightning Adapter as an "Additional" item "to have a second adapter for your home or office." The supposedly included Lightning Adapter, however, was not listed by Apple as being part of "What's in the box" that customers receive with an iPhone 5.

The free Lightning Adapter has since been revealed to have been an error. The Next Web spoke with an Apple representative to clear up the matter, discovering that Apple will not be offering a free adapter as part of the iPhone 5 package. The language on the Lightning Adapter listing has been changed, and it now only touts the adapter as an "intelligent and ultra-compact adapter to connect your 30-pin accessories." Apple is reportedly investigating the error.

The Lightning Adapter and Lightning-to-USB cable are now sold out in Apple's online store and are listed as shipping in two to three weeks. The Lightning-to-30-pin and Lightning-to-30-pin cable adapters are still slated to ship in October.

Apple needs to make good on this an include the adapter with every iPhone. They need to quit being so cheap and expect everyone to pony up for things that should be included to ease the transition.

The EU will make it mandatory, since crApple is already forced to include an additional adaptor in that region by law.

Since Apple usually has all their website changes ready to go for an announcement and simply hits publish when it's time I am guessing that at some point in the past they WERE expecting to ship an adapter with every phone but then decided to make it separate.

The language was too specific to just be an oops. There was one point when this was "the plan"

Personally I would be happy if they didn't put any markup on the adapter and simply sold it at their cost. then you could afford to put one on every accessory and spare cable you have. For some people to do this it would cost a lot of money because of all the accessory products they have built up over the years.

GREED is now deeply rooted into crApple's blueprint. They don't need facades anymore. Wait until the new headphones become "mandatory" for a specific feature or some crap like that.

Doubt it. Apple has divested itself pretty much from including any adapters or the like with any of their products. They expect their customers to either upgrade their peripherals or just buy the adapter. Most aren't going to care.

And the language could have been wrong for the easy reason that there was a misunderstanding by whoever was writing up the text (though why the canada store would have any text at all different than the us store is beyond me - not like we're talking conversion to chinese or spanish or something).

Apple prefers people pony up. As I've read other posters on these boards say "If you can afford an Apple product, you surely can afford a stupid adapter!".

Plus, it's how Apple keeps margins high.

We could change this, please sign this petition to ask Apple to include a free lightning to 30-pin adapter and share this. If thousands of peoples sign this maybe we can get something - www.change.org/petitions/apple-inc-provide-iphone-5-with-free-lightning-to-30-pin-adapter-included
