ReadyNAS update adds remote Time Machine, mobile client

updated 09:00 am EDT, Tue September 11, 2012

Update helps users create easy, quick personal cloud for storage

Netgear has released a free update for its ReadyNAS line of network attached storage. The new version OS 5.3.6 adds several key features, including remote backup capability for Apple's Time Machine, ReadyDROP cloud-based storage implementation, mobile clients for ReadyDLNA media streaming, and more.

The new ReadyDROP feature provides a small business or home-based private cloud storage system on the network device, similar to DropBox. With real-time file synchronization, VPN-class encryption, and the data stored directly on the ReadyNAS storage appliance, a common complaint of cloud storage being possibly insecure is alleviated.

With the latest update, a compatible ReadyNAS device becomes Time Machine-backup capable. The implementation allows local or remote backup with no router configuration needed.

While the ReadyNAS attached storage devices are already ReadyDLNA media streamers, the new update allows mobile clients to also receive the streaming media, regardless of location.

An additional application store supplements the ReadyNAS, allowing third parties to sell apps or subscriptions for the device. Applications such as ReadyNAS Replicate, allowing duplication of network attached storage either locally or remotely are available on the store.

The new operating system will be available for free on the RND2000, 2010, 2210, 4000, 4210, and 4410 families of the Netgear ReadyNAS.
