iPod touch expected to get 1136x640 display, S5L8942X chip

iPhone, iPod may finally implement panoramic camera option

The new iPod touch should have a 1136x640 display like the iPhone 5, and is currently using an N78 codename, reports say. Developer Will Strafach -- better known as Chronic -- is claiming that the device will get an S5L8942X processor instead of an S5L8950X, which should finally upgrade the Touch to an A5-level chip, but still leave it behind the iPhone 5 in terms of performance. 9to5Mac sources say that Apple intends to keep the same base price point for the media player, on or around $200.

Strafach adds that both the iPhone and the Touch may finally be getting a long-awaited Panorama option in the Camera app. The mode was first referenced in iOS 5 code last year, but never made it into shipping firmware. Apple may finally be prepared to launch it with the advent of iOS 6.

Regarding other iPods, 9to5's sources say that a new iPod nano is codenamed N31, while the updated Shuffle is the N12B. Both are expected to come in eight colors variants. The Touch may also get several different colors, although that would be a first for any iOS device.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPods on Wednesday as part of an iPhone 5 press event. The Touch and Nano in particular may be due for major overhauls, since in 2011 the devices were left essentially unchanged.
