Google Fiber project sees 180 Fiberhoods reach target

updated 09:15 am EDT, Mon September 10, 2012

Quarter of targets hit in last 36 hours

Most neighborhoods in the initial Google Fiber cities have met their pre-registration targets. At least 180 of the 202 "fiberhoods" defined by Google in both Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, have signed up enough households for the high-speed Gigabit Internet service to be switched on, with only one fiberhood showing no interest whatsoever.

Google initially set the goal for each fiberhood as between 5 percent and 25 percent of all households, with each being required to pay a $10 registration fee. After four days, 34 fiberhoods had reached their pre-set target, and two weeks ago, only half had hit their targets. 36 hours before the end, 142 fiberhoods qualified, with the remainder getting in just before the deadline. A boost was seen a week ago, where a recount of households saw 73 areas get reduced targets.

Now that the registration period is over, Google will have to determine the order installation. Fiberhoods with higher percentages of registered interest are likely to be set-up first, however Kansas City, Kansas will be a higher priority than Missouri, due to the company's original service plan covering just one area and not two. The final installation order will be made public on Thursday.

Households that registered their interest will get their service with the $300 installation fee waived if they take up a subscription plan. Three tiers of service will be available to choose from, including a low-speed "Free" tier without a subscription. Gigabit Internet access will cost $70 per month, while a version with an enhanced cable TV service will cost $120 per month. [via Google Fiber Blog]
