Red prepares Epic-M Monochrome for $42,000 pre-orders

White-only Mysterium-X sensor with ISO of 2,000

Red Camera, the manufacturer of high-end photographic equipment used in films, has opened up pre-orders for its Epic-M Monochrome camera. Using an updated version of the white-only 5K Mysterium-X sensor, it allows for no color debayering through its one-to-one pixel count, with every individual pixel being used for luminance.

It is claimed to have a native ISO of 2,000, over twice that of other Red models, the Epic-M and X. A new Low Pass Filter is used to accommodate the reduced pixel pitch of the sensor, namely 1x1 instead of 2x2 Bayer.

Pre-orders will open from the company website tomorrow for shipping on October 1st, with a price set at $42,000 for the camera body alone, and a free upgrade to the Dragon Monochrome Sensor due in the first quarter of 2013.

Red has seen its cameras adopted by a number of big names in the movie business. David Fincher is shooting his current project solely on the Epic-M Monochrome, while Peter Jackson bought "at least" 30 Epic cameras to shoot The Hobbit at the end of 2010. [via Engadget]
