Shipper expects large volume of 'small, lightweight packages'

Courier FedEx is bracing itself for a period of heavy shipping activity called a "surge volume," likely tied to Apple's impending new iPhone release. The period of September 21-24 has been identified by various sources, placing it nine days after Apple's planned iPhone announcement. FedEx had similar periods 10 days after the iPhone 4S announcement, and eight days after the iPhone 3GS presser.

MacNN spoke with a FedEx representative in Virginia who was told to expect the highest volume towards the end of the period. While not detailed, special preparations have been made at the source's FedEx depot for a "large volume of small, lightweight packages." The source also confirmed that some employee-requested vacation days have been cancelled during the time period in question, but not all of them.

Further confirming the date, MacRumors has an email to a Fedex employee moving a training date away from the middle of the "surge volume" period. While Apple hasn't specifically been mentioned by either MacNN's source or the MacRumors email, FedEx is Apple's primary shipping partner for packages shipped from its US distribution centers.
