Samsung Galaxy S III reaches 20M sale milestone in 100 days

North America makes up fifth of Samsung sales total

Samsung is claiming to have sold 20 million units of the Galaxy S III. The smartphone hit the milestone sales figure in 100 days, just 50 days after it broke the 10 million barrier. Despite a large number of pre-orders making up a significant portion of the 10 million milestone, the handset seems to continue selling at a fairly consistent rate.

Europeans bought 6 million handsets, the highest number of sales on a continental basis. North America reached 4 million sales, with 4.5 in Asia. South Korea alone makes up 2.5 million of the total. Compared to previous handsets, the Galaxy S III sold three times as fast as its predecessor, the S II, and six times the speed of the Galaxy S.

The high sales of the Galaxy S III may suffer in the future, as Apple has named the smartphone alongside other Samsung devices for another trial next year. Mirroring the recent legal events between the twor companies, Apple is claiming Samsung of infringing on four patents, which could see sales injunctions placed against the products and another hefty fine for the South Korean electronics giant.
