Sony prices 84-inch 4K TV at $25k, takes pre-orders

updated 11:30 am EDT, Thu September 6, 2012

Aiming for shipping, retail in November

Sony has put its first 4K TV available to pre-order. The XBR-84X900, previously rumored and publicly announced last week at IFA, will be shipping in November at the same time as Sony stores and other electronics retailers across the US. The price for the 84-inch screen has been set at $25,000.

The 4K LCD panel has dynamic edge-lit LED backlighting, and uses the three-chip 4K X-Reality Pro picture engine. Capable of upscaling movies to the 4K resolution of 3840x2160 and showing passive full HD 3D video, it can also display images from digital cameras and also use the PlayMemories Studio application for the PlayStation 3 for picture management. The two vertical speaker bars containing a 10-unit live speaker system for virtual 5.1 surround sound is also included, as is connectivity to Sony Entertainment Network services including Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited, Netflix, and 50 other online services through the set's built-in Wi-Fi connection.

The release of the TV makes a rumor of the PlayStation 4 having 4K support more likely, as there will be a significant lack of content for the resolution. At four times the resolution of HD, most services will find it difficult to provide content with potentially huge file sizes. Although some Sony Blu-ray players are able to upscale to 4K, there are currently no Blu-ray discs that hold 4K content. YouTube does offer some clips at the resolution, however they require a significantly high-bandwidth connection to play without buffering.
