Popcorn Hour A-400 media player gets 3D video support

updated 09:15 am EDT, Tue September 4, 2012

Popcorn Hour A-400 is coming to European Union markets in October

Malaysia-based Syabas this week revealed its upcoming networked media player, the Popcorn Hour A-400. The most significant upgrade compared to the previous A-300 media player is the ability to playback 3D video content, though a Blu-ray drive isn't present. It also gets advanced features like detail enhancement and debanding.

It otherwise follows in the tradition of previous Popcorn Hour-branded players, there is space for hard drives or solid state drives inside. Out of the box, it can play back content stored on a computer connected over an Ethernet cable. A Wi-Fi dongle is optional, but an SD card reader and a USB 2.0 port are built-in for local content playback. Rounding out the connections are an HDMI 1.4 connection and an eSATA port.

By the time the box ships in October, it may also get a USB 3.0 port. A plethora of file formats are supported and the A-400 will allow users to download subtitles in a choice of one of 22 languages without having to turn to a computer.

Processing power comes from Sigma Design's dual-core, 800MHz SMP 8911 chipset.

Through the Syabas Apps Market, users can access YouTube, BBC's iPlayer, Facebook, Twitter, and more than 90 other free or paid channels.

Thus far only slated for a European debut, the device will cost 289 (the equivalent of $364). US pricing or ship dates aren't yet known.
