VidaBox prepares vPlayer, vStreamer media extenders

updated 08:45 pm EDT, Sun September 2, 2012

Media extenders connectable to home automation systems

VidaBox is shipping two new media extenders. A change from previous releases that resemble home theater PCs, the vPlayer and vStreamer units are designed to be stacked with other home theater equipment, and are able to stream stored Blu-ray, DVD, and music content from any VidaBox server, Media Center, or Media Network Attached Storage.

Aside from the vPlayer having a slot-loading Blu-ray drive and the vStreamer forgoing the option, the two extenders are basically the same. Local streaming from a server on the network and online streaming services can both be performed through the single Ethernet port, while 7.1-channel audio and 1080p video can be pushed through the HDMI. Connection to home automation systems through RS-232 is also supported by the units, which are also claimed to use less than 35 Watts of power and emit less than 27 decibels.

Although individual pricing hasn't been divulged by the company, it does hope to start shipping the pair of extenders from September 4th.
