Adobe Flash makes brief return to UK Play Store for BBC

updated 05:05 pm EDT, Sun September 2, 2012

Adobe bows to partner pressure, revives mobile Flash temporarily

In a slight reversal, Adobe has returned its Flash media player to Google's UK Play Store. According to the BBC, the move comes following pressure from Adobe's "strategic partners," including the BBC itself, who asked that Adobe continue to support mobile Flash, as that is the technology underpinning many of their applications.

Adobe agreed to its partners' request, but the Flash revival is thought to be a short-lived one, and Adobe's partners are working to move their services to different technologies such as HTML5.

Flash is now back in the UK Google Play Store, though it's uncertain how long the software will be there. Adobe has said that Flash will be removed from the Play Store at a future date, but gave no details beyond "soon" on a date for the plugin's removal. As was the case before, the Flash player is only certified to work with Android up to version 4.0.x, indicating that no changes have been made to the final version of the code.
