updated 08:56 pm EDT, Thu August 30, 2012

Ultrabooks and notebooks add to Windows 8 selection

Toshiba announced even more additions to its line of Windows 8 portables today, unveiling a number of Ultrabooks and Satellite notebooks. The new line includes the Satellite U845W, Satellite U945, and Satellite S955. The new portables are scheduled for a late October release, and each is optimized to run Windows 8.

The Satellite U845W is an Ultrabook model sporting a 14.4-inch ultrawide-HD TruBrite display outputting at 1792x768 in a 21:9 ratio. The widescreen display allows the U845W to display about 30 percent more of the tiles on the Windows 8 Start Screen. Inside, it packs an Intel Core i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge processor, 6GB DDR 1600MHz RAM, and a 500GB HDD with 32GB SSD or 256GB SSD. It has three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a Memory Card slot. The U845 also features harman/kardon stereo speakers with SRS Premium Sound 3D.

The Satellite U945 weighs less than four pounds and measures less than 0.8 inches thick. It has a 14-inch HD TruBrite display, Intel Core i3 or i5 Ivy Bridge processor, and two USB 3.0 ports, as well as one USB 2.0 port. It also features an HDMI out and a Memory Card slot. Its ClickPad features full Windows 8 gesture support, an HD webcam, and the option of an LED backlit keyboard. Inside, the U945 comes with a 500GB HDD and a 32GB SSD cache.

The Satellite S955 is meant for entertainment-oriented users. It is 35 percent thinner than the previous version, giving it dimensions that approach those of an Ultrabook. Inside, it has an Intel Core processor and an AMD A Series Accelerated Processing Unit, as well as up to 8GB of memory. Its 15.6-inch display outputs in HD, and it features a built-in DVD drive, as well as two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, an HDMI out, a media card reader, Bluetooth 4.0, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. The S955 comes with up to 750GB of HDD storage.

All three models will be available at major retailers, online outlets, and direct from Toshiba at ToshibaDirect.com. Toshiba will release the devices on October 26 of this year, though the company has not revealed pricing details.
