Toshiba reveals Ultrabook, 3D sound bar, more at IFA

Smart TV, business projectors among new products

Toshiba announced today the launch of a wide range of new products at the IFA trade show in Berlin. Toshiba's new models include a the company's first Windows 8 PCs, new Smart TVs, new Camileo camcorders, and more. Most of Toshiba's new devices will be launching in the third and fourth quarters of 2012, though a few are slated for release in 2013. Toshiba will be releasing pricing information on its new products as their launch dates approach.

Toshiba's new TL968 and RL958 TV series have been updated to include built-in Wi-Fi with access to Toshiba Places, an Open Browser, Intel Wireless Display, Skype compatibility, and USB Video Recording. Both TVs output at 1920x1080p Full HD with a 16:9 ratio. The TL968 series is capable of 3D output using active shutter technology and upgrading 2D content to 3D. The TL968 series comes in 46-inch and 40-inch sizes, while the RL958 series comes in 40-inch and 32-inch sizes. Both lines will be available in Q4 2012.

The new WL968 series is Toshiba's new premium 3D TV range. It comes with four pairs of 3D glasses, allowing for family viewing out of the box. The WL968 also features built-in Wi-Fi, allowing users to access content from YouTube, Acetrax, and other online content sources.

Toshiba also revealed two new sound bars, the 3D Sound Bar SB1-SBK1 and the Mini 3D Sound Bar with Subwoofer-SBM1W. The SB1-SBK1 features a classic sound bar design meant to complement flatscreen TVs. It measures 850x78x82mm and has six speakers including a built-in subwoofer. These speakers combine to output sound at 80 Watts. The SBM1W is a compact solution measuring 290x72x100mm. It features inputs designed to connect with TVs, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones, as well as Bluetooth connectivity for wireless streaming. Both models use Sonic Emotion Absolute 3D technology to create virtual 3D sound. The SBM1W will be available in Q4 2012, while the SB1-SBK1 is available starting in 2013.

Toshiba's Satellite U920T convertible Ultrabook combines a tablet's touchscreen interface with the keyboard of a notebook. The device features a 12.5-inch touchscreen and a sliding mechanism that transforms it from tablet into notebook mode. The touchscreen supports five points of input and is coated in Corning Gorilla Glass. It The U920T also features an accelerometer, up to 128GB of SSD storage, an Ivy Bridge processor, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU. It comes with two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, and an HDMI port, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The U920 also features a 1MP front-facing camera with an ambient light sensor and a 3MP rear-facing camera with auto-focus. It will be available in Q4 2012.

The Satellite U940 is a more traditional Ultrabook form factor, featuring a 14-inch display outputting at 1366x768. Along with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, it comes with up to 6GB DDR3 RAM and up to 1TB HDD space, as well as a 32GB SSD. It is 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi compatible, with Bluetooth 4.0 and Intel Wireless Display built in. The U940 has two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, an SDTM card reader, Ethernet LAN, and an HDMI out. It weighs 1.79kb and has a 1MP webcam. The U940 will run the 64 bit version of Windows 8. Toshiba has not provided details on a launch window.

The Satellite P845 is a touchscreen multimedia laptop with a 14-inch capacitive touchscreen. It features an Intel Core ultra-low voltage processor and the option of NVIDIA GeForce or Optimus graphics technology. The P845 comes with 6GB RAM, a 640GB HDD, and customers have the option of upgrading to a Blu-ray Disc drive. The P845 will be available in Q4 2012.

Toshiba will also be adding three new entries to its Full HD Camileo camcorder line. The Camileo S40 features a compact pistol grip design and comes in four colors. It records in Full HD with electronic image stabilization and 5x zoom. It also features a 3-inch touchscreen with an icon-based GUI and connects to TVs, tablets, and notebooks through mini HDMI and microUSB interfaces.

The Camileo X150 features 10x optical zoom while still recording in Full HD. It is also capable of taking still pictures while recording, and its face detection technologies include smile capturing and face tracking modes. The X150 also includes a video editing application, allowing for basic editing features to be performed on-device.

The Camileo BW20 is a waterproof model meant for outdoor sports and activity recording. It is dustproof, can withstand falls up to 1.5m, and is waterproof up to 5m for 30 minutes. Its light sensitivity allows for high contrast recording in light conditions as low as 2lux, and it features a buoyant strap, preventing the device from sinking. The BW20, S40, and X150 will be available in the UK in Q4 2012.

Finally, Toshiba's new NHX21A and NHW22A data projectors are aimed at business customers. Both models have an extended lifetime of up to 20,000 hours before they will need replacement bulbs. Both devices can transmit images with a diagonal measurement up to 7.62m. At 1m, the NHX21A can screen pictures up to 2.46m, while the NHW22A can screen images up to 1.93m. The NHX21A outputs at a brightness of 2,500 lumens, while the NHW22A outputs at 3,000 lumens. Both devices feature startup times of five seconds and have an hDMI port. The two projectors will be available starting in Q3 2012.
