Atom-powered tablet headlines HP's Windows 8 lineup

HP has announced its latest foray into tablet computing since the ill-fated TouchPad lineup was discontinued. The Envy X2 is a 3.1-pound aluminum laptop computer boasting a removable display. The multi-touch capable screen doubles as a tablet device with optional pen support.

When separated, the tablet portion weighs 1.5 pounds. The HP Envy x2 features an 11.6-inch 1366x768 300-nit IPS HD multitouch panel with a HD webcam on the front of the screen, and an 8MP camera on the back providing image input to the device.

The computer is driven by an Atom Clover Trail-based processor, with clock speed unknown at this time. Storage is provided by a 64GB SSD, with a full-size SD card reader integral to the computer. A pair of USB ports and a full-size HDMI output adorn the unit.

Beats Audio speakers, and a Near-Field Communication (NFC) system are standard. The HP Envy X2 is expected to be available in the US for the holiday purchasing season, but no date or pricing revealed.
