NEX-5N successor adds Wi-Fi radio

Among a diverse set of introductions at the IFA expo in Germany, Sony previewed two new imaging products: the NEX-5R mirrorless camera and the Action Cam wearable camcorder. The 5R is the latest model in the company's NEX compact-system cameras, integrating a 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, a new Bionz engine, and a Wi-Fi radio for direct sharing via several apps.

The camera is claimed to bring significant improvements to autofocus performance, combining 25-point contrast autofocus with 99-point phase-detection autofocus for tracking moving objects. The body also offers a control dial, function button, and a hinged LCD with 180 degrees of orientation range.

The wearable Action Cam is available in two editions, one providing basic recording functionality and the other adding a Wi-Fi radio. Both support 1080p recording from the back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, or 1280x720 capture at up to 120fps for slow-motion shooting.

The camcorders take advantage of Carl Zeiss' Tessar glass with an f2.8 aperture, while SteadyShot stabilization aims to reduce shake. The basic hardware is not waterproof, though an included rugged case promises full protection from the elements and a tripod mount for additional security.

The NEX-5R with an 18-55mm kit lens is now available to pre-order for $750, with availability expected in the second half of October. The Action Cam can be pre-ordered for $200, while the Wi-Fi variant jumps to $270, and both are slated to ship next month.
